Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) is an important channel through which global investors participate in India’s capital markets by investing in equities, bonds, and other marketable securities, without seeking controlling ownership in Indian companies. To invest in India, FPIs must register with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and comply with the regulatory requirements prescribed under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). FPIs play a significant role in strengthening India’s financial markets by facilitating the inflow of foreign capital, enhancing market liquidity, and improving overall market efficiency. Alongside Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), FPI contributes to greater investor confidence, supports the development of deeper and more dynamic capital markets, and strengthens India’s integration with the global financial system.
